Manchester United were on the brink of defeat having led 2-0 against Porto on Thursday night, only for Harry Maguire to step up and rescue his side.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund had put United 2-0 up in the first half and they looked set to record their first three points of the Europa League campaign. What followed was an all too familiar sight, with United leaking goals as Porto found themselves 3-2 up five minutes into the second half.

With Erik ten Hag fighting to save his job, defeat in Porto would surely have confirmed his fate. Now it’s on to Villa Park with United desperately in need of three points.

Dressing room chats

Harry Maguire has admitted honest conversations took place in Manchester United’s dressing room after Thursday’s chaotic draw against Porto.

United needed a victory against Porto to ease pressure on Erik ten Hag and they made the dream start to the game when going 2-0 up thanks to Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.

Although it looked like Porto would face an uphill battle to claw themselves back into the contest after going down by two in 20 minutes, they responded through Pepe in the 27th minute.

Why Rashford came off

Erik ten Hag acknowledged Marcus Rashford’s defending was an issue in Manchester United’s chaotic first half against Porto before he was substituted.

Rashford put United 1-0 up in the seventh minute and played in Rasmus Hojlund to extend United’s advantage in the 20th minute. However, Porto scored twice within seven minutes to head in level at half-time.

Alejandro Garnacho warmed up at half-time and surprisingly replaced Rashford, who did not complete 90 minutes in any of his previous five United appearances. Ten Hag claimed Rashford’s removal was rotation-related.
