Coconuts are more often associated with the sun-filled paradise destinations you’ll arrive at by the end of your flight.

They’re hardly a common in-flight accessory.

But that could be a mistake – as the fruit has certain properties that could prove extremely useful while on board.

A man has revealed the bizarre reason you should bring a coconut on your next flight.

The traveller, @SolBrah, posted on X: ‘Flying ProTip: You cannot travel with full water bottles but you can travel with a full unopened coconut.

‘Arrive to your destination fully hydrated.’

Coconuts are great for hydration as they contain minerals and electrolyes.

‘Some people drink coconut water for its electrolytes. Those are charged minerals that help you stay hydrated,’ The Mayo Clinic reported.

Coconuts are a potentially great item to bring on board to keep you hydrated

Electrolytes in coconut water include potassium, sodium and manganese – which can be helpful when flying.

This is because dehydration can affect you on planes due to the low-humidity air – and, in some cases, if you don’t drink enough water.

Viewers took to the comments on the post by @SolBrah on X, with some hailing the idea as excellent and ingenious.

One comment read: ‘Matrix hack’, while another said the traveller was a ‘true pioneer’ thanks to his suggestion.

A third added: ‘Awesome life hack, thanks for sharing!’

Meanwhile, another wrote: ‘Was not prepared for this sort of genius today.’

However, others criticised the idea, with many questioning how one would open the coconut on board.

One wrote: ‘You do need a knife or sharp object to open it though.’

Restrictions on liquids mean large bottles of water are not allowed on board

Another added: ‘Okay but how do you open it?’

And a third chimed in: ‘Then you can just jam out your hatchet and smash a hole in that thing midflight.’

Some pointed out potential risks, with one viewer commenting: ‘A lot of airports forbid carrying coconuts as potential hazards. Although not sure if it’s only forbidden in the checked in bag.’

It’s always worth checking with your airline before you fly to confirm you are permitted to bring a coconut on board.
