A Chinese manufacturing company has confirmed that the UK will be its first European headquarters as it looks to build on its relationship with Jaguar Land Rover.

Chery Commercial Vehicle (CCV) has confirmed that Liverpool will act as its European headquarters, marking a major boost to the region.

The arrival of Chery Commercial Vehicle will create high-value jobs in several crucial sectors, including engineering, software development, and research and development.

Liverpool City Council has described it as “one of the most significant projects” in recent history as the Chinese vehicle manufacturer aims to boost its presence in the European market.

It follows Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s meeting with China’s President Xi Jinping in Beijing yesterday, which was designed to improve frosty relations between the two nations.

Chery confirmed that its commercial vehicle division would expand “for full localisation”, allowing it to integrate deeply into the UK automotive sector.

Gong Yueqiong, General Manager of Chery Commercial Vehicle, said: “We are not just bringing products to the UK – we are building a British business.

“Our ‘In UK, For UK, Be UK’ strategy reflects our belief that true globalisation comes from deep localisation.

“By recruiting local talent, collaborating with UK institutions, and adapting to local needs, we aim to become a valued contributor to the UK’s automotive industry and economy.”

Mr Yueqiong emphasised that the company placed confidence in the UK’s infrastructure and commitment to green technology.

He also praised Liverpool as the location for its first manufacturing base in Europe, describing it as the “perfect location”.

Chery, as a car brand, has been in the UK for less than a year, but has already made a positive impression on motorists, with more than 5,500 sales in 2025.

This was enough to capture 0.27 per cent of the total market share, beating out the likes of established brands including Alpine, DS Automobiles, Jaguar, Smart and Subaru.

Chery, alongside other Chinese brands entering the UK market, has lofty goals to introduce affordable and high-tech vehicles into the UK market.

The Chinese brand has collaborated with Jaguar Land Rover since 2012, forming Chery Jaguar Land Rover to sell vehicles in China, which is one of the brand’s biggest markets.

Steve Rotherham, Mayor of Liverpool City Region, said the decision to choose Liverpool as its HQ was a “fantastic vote of confidence” in the manufacturing prowess of the area.

He continued, saying: “This move will create high-quality jobs and long-term economic benefits, helping to further strengthen our region’s reputation at the forefront of cleaner, smarter transport.

“The Combined Authority has worked very closely with Liverpool City Council and Chery Commercial Vehicle to help make this investment possible, and we’ll continue to support Chery Commercial Vehicle’s plans for further growth, so it delivers lasting benefits for communities and businesses across our region.”

Similarly, Councillor Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, highlighted the link between China and Liverpool, with the city being twinned with Shanghai.

“Chery Commercial Vehicle’s arrival builds on that history, strengthening our global links while helping us deliver a sustainable and connected future,” he added.
