‘Luxury’ coat thefts in broad daylight

A recent spate of Canada Goose coat muggings could be the start of a new “luxury crime trend” as owners are warned to be cautious by one of Britain’s leading criminologists.

Muggers have targeted the expensive coat – which can be sold for as much as £1,700 – up and down the country.

In a bid to get their hands on the coats, thieves have broken in cars, robbed pedestrians, neighbours have stolen from one another and even caused knife attacks.

It comes as shocking footage shared on Sunday showed two thugs trying to steal one of the expensive coats in broad daylight at a train station in Kent.

Last December, a man was allegedly slashed in the face with a knife while being mugged for his coat.

He shared a video of himself in hospital with a huge scar across his face.

A Transport for London boss also urged young people travelling on public transport about a rise in North Face and Canada Goose coat thefts.

In other parts of the UK, cars have been broken into as thugs steal coats form vehicles.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

David Wilson, a professor of criminology at Birmingham City University said the rise could be just the start of a more worrying trend.

“It could be the start of a new spate of luxury item muggings,” Wilson told the Daily Mail.

“You may recall we’ve seen muggings of this sort before.

“Thieves used to target Rolex watches which go for thousands of pounds and then flog them online because they’re usually stolen to order.

“I would tell anyone wearing Canada Goose jackets to be careful and be aware of your surroundings and who’s around you.

“You have to be vigilant for opportunists who might try to steal them.

“But I would also tell anyone interested in buying knock-offs to use a bit of common sense.

“Don’t buy luxury items being sold for less than half the price – help break the market.”
