A lorry driver has died in a fatal car crash on the M27 near Southampton Airport as police make three arrests.

The collision, which included a Mercedes lorry, Nissan Juke and Volkswagen Polo, took place on Wednesday just after midday.

Hampshire Police revealed the deceased lorry driver was a man in his 30s.

Two men, aged 32 and 37, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

A 40-year-old woman was also arrested for the same offence.

Police confirmed the trio remain in hospital and the woman in the Nissan also sustained minor injuries.

The M27 westbound remains closed between J9 and J5 following yesterday’s serious collision.

Traffic is instead being diverted at J9 to the A27.

National Highways has said the road will possibly remain closed until tonight as emergency works continue to take place.

Hampshire Police said the lorry caught fire “several hours” after the crash.

A gantry was also damaged during the fatal collision.

Hampshire Police have requested anyone who witnessed the crash or those with dashcam footage to get in touch.
