An extensive makeover of the London Eye has begun and has seen a capsule be floated down the River Thames.

The iconic landmark is undergoing a modernising project after being open for 25 years.

It will see all 32 of its capsules, which offer jaw-dropping views of the capital at 440ft high, removed and upgraded with the latest technology and safety features.

The very first has been taken down from the London Eye and floated on a barge to UK Loco.

The 10-tonne capsule will be put through six months of tests to evaluate which components need replacement or enhancement.

A team of 12 people worked to detach the capsule for 12 hours and they placed a temporary cage in the space.

This cannot be occupied and will remain on the London Eye until the capsule is ready to be reinstalled.

It comes after the latest renewal effort took place in 2009 and was completed in 2012.

This time, the project is expected to finish by early 2029.

Robin Goodchild, Senior General Manager of The London Eye explained how the project would help to ‘futurise’ the iconic attraction.

He said: ‘In line with the planning permission for The London Eye, we pledged to futurise and invest in upgrading London’s most iconic skyline attraction.

‘It’s a momentous milestone to see the first capsule removed by our highly skilled team, as we continue the celebrating our 25th anniversary year.’

The manager revealed the London Eye’s appearance may change during the renovations but will remain open.

Robin said: ‘The Eye may look a little different to usual, whilst the renovation works are underway, but it’ll keep on rotating and welcoming guests to view London from 135M above.’

Meanwhile, Stuart Watson Director at UK Loco said: ‘It’s not every day that you see a capsule from Britain’s most recognisable attraction come floating down The Thames on its way to your workshop!

‘We’ve been eagerly awaiting the first capsule’s arrival so our team can get cracking with the upgrade and future proofing works.’

The London Eye first opened in 2000 and is the largest cantilever observation wheel in the world.

It stands 135m tall and it takes 30 minutes to fully rotate around the wheel.

Each capsule can hold up to 25 people and every one offers impressive 360-degree views of London’s sights.

Prices start from £29 per adult, and there are even options to hire a pod privately.
