Former Manchester United defender Alvaro Fernandez is reportedly being targeted by Liverpool.

United loaned Fernandez to Benfica last season and the Portuguese club activated their £5million option-to-buy clause this summer, bringing to an end the Spaniard’s four years at Old Trafford.

Prior to this, the 21-year-old left-back spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan at Preston North End but never made a first-team appearance for the Red Devils.

Impressing since leaving United, however, his performances are believed to have resulted in interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid, the latter of which he represented during his youth career.

A fresh report by Spanish outlet AS has claimed Liverpool are now in the running for Fernandez as they are “in search of a long-term” replacement for Andy Robertson. The article states it is Liverpool are “stalking” the player and are the club “who have shown the greatest interest” to date, however it remains to be seen if this results in a bid being made.

Liverpool last dealt with Benfica during the summer of 2022 when purchasing Darwin Nunez, a player United were also eyeing at the time, and would need to be smart negotiators once again due to the fact Fernandez is under contract until 2029. The Portuguese giants are said to have “strength” over the player’s future as his release clause is not currently common knowledge.

United could well have done with keeping Fernandez at Old Trafford due to the current injury issues at left-back, with both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia sidelined. Erik ten Hag’s concerns at full-back were recently made even worse by news of Noussair Mazraoui having to undergo a minor heart procedure, potentially further depleting depth across the defence.
