The Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng entered into a heated debate with ex-Labour MP Luciana Berger on GB News today.
Discussing Rishi Sunak’s final push ahead of the election, Berger claimed that the Prime Minister looked as if he was just “going through the motions”.
The Prime Minister will face a general election on Thursday and is expected to be ousted from Number 10, as it has been predicted that Labour will have a sweeping win.
Speaking about the PM’s speech earlier today, Berger said: “I think in terms of the spirit of what we just heard, I didn’t believe him. I thought he was just going through the motions.”
She added: “I also listen to the substance of what he just said and unusually, the very things that he was asking the public to consider are the very things on his record where I think and I think many of the public think that he’s failed.
“So he talked about taxes and not having increases in taxes. We have the most taxed country that we’ve had in the last 70 years. He talked about energy bills. I think anyone watching this will know and have felt the pain of energy bills.”

GB News host Andrew Pierce argued: “Cut him some slack here, Ukraine was a major factor in that.”
She responded: “There’s always geopolitical crises. But if this government had invested in whether it’s the new power stations that we were talking about in 2010 and generating energy in this country rather than importing it from abroad like the Labour Party says it wants to do by creating energy, we wouldn’t have had this experience. The pain of the bills that we’ve all had across the globe.”
Kwarteng then stepped in and argued: “To talk about importing gas and energy and saying that’s a bad thing when Labour are committed essentially to destroying the North Sea and withdrawing licenses is crazy. So they’re doing more to make us reliant on foreign imports of energy than anybody.”
Luciana Berger argued: “We have to have an energy mix we don’t have in this country and particularly as an island where we actually have natural resources that we could be harnessing. We should be doing so much more.”

Kwarteng furiously responded: “I think that you are precisely wrong actually. If you compare British energy to French energy, we’ve got a much more diverse source of power. We’ve got gas. We’ve got renewables, both offshore wind and wind.”
She said: “We don’t have enough of a mix.”
She added: “I agree that we should include nuclear in our mix, but. But when was it that your government first started talking about a new nuclear power station?
“It was between 2010 and 2013 It was 14 years ago. We still don’t have a new nuclear power station.”

Polling by Ipsos and the Financial Times published on Tuesday showed that a quarter of voters who said they were backing the Conservative party were doing so to prevent Labour winning a large majority.
About 28 per cent of Tory voters said they were supporting Sunak because they feared tax increases if his party was removed from office.
After failing to close a 20-point gap with Labour during the election campaign, the Tories have shifted to urging voters to prevent Sir Keir Starmer’s party winning a victory that leaves only a stunted opposition.
