The Palace has confirmed that King Charles will attend the Garter Day service next week despite expecting a busy weekend with Trooping the Colour.

Garter Day sees Ladies and Knights of the Order of the Garter – the country’s oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry – process down the hill from the Berkshire Castle’s State Apartments to St George’s Chapel, dressed in white plumed hats and dark blue velvet robes and being watched by crowds of people.

After the service, the King, Queen and other members of the Royal Family will return to the castle by carriage.

This year, the Duchess of Gloucester will be invested into the ancient order of chivalry, having been made a Royal Lady Companion in April. Lord Lloyd-Webber was announced in April and is thought to be the first person in the arts and culture world to be made a member.

At the time, Lord Lloyd-Webber described it as “the greatest honour of my life.”

There has been no confirmation on whether Prince William will attend, but his wife Princess Kate is unlikely to be there as she continues her own cancer treatment.

The King is expected to have a busy weekend as he celebrates his birthday with Trooping the Colour and his annual birthday parade.

Charles has also been undergoing treatment since he was diagnosed with a form of cancer and has recently returned to royal duties.

The type of cancer King Charles has been diagnosed with has not been disclosed.

Some allowances have been made for his health and at the Trooping the Colour event this weekend he will be inspecting the soldiers from a carriage, rather than on horseback.

It is unconfirmed whether or not Charles’s daughter-in-law Princess Kate will appear at the event.

The princess is thought to be “considering” an appearance on the balcony but “only if she is well enough.”

Sources told the outlet that the mother of three may join other senior royals to witness the traditional RAF Flypast after the ceremony but it is unlikely that this will be confirmed until nearer the time.

Kate has not performed any royal duties in 2024 and has been recovering from her illness in private.

The King initially stepped back from his public duties.

However, the monarch has started to perform royal engagements again, even travelling to France on June 6 to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
