Sir Keir Starmer is hoping to meet with Donald Trump before the US election in six weeks’ time.

The Prime Minister said he hoped to meet Trump and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris as he headed to New York City where he will address the United Nations’ General Assembly later this week.

Speaking to reporters on the flight to New York, Starmer said he would like to meet the two candidates before polling day in America on November 5.

He said: “As far as the candidates are concerned, look, if possible, it would be very good to meet both of them at some stage before the election. We’ll just have to see what’s possible.”

Starmer will become the first Labour Prime Minister to address the UN in 15 years when he speaks to world leaders on Thursday.

He added: “What will dominate is the Middle East and recent developments and, of course, Ukraine. So I think that’ll be pretty central.

“And it will be really important for us to have the conversations with our allies about the situation in both of those areas.”

He added: “I’m going for the General Assembly. I don’t doubt that a lot of time is going to be spent on the Middle East and Ukraine.”
