Wigan have made their fourth signing of the January transfer window, bringing in Carlisle defender Jon Mellish for an undisclosed fee on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The 27-year-old, who can play at left-back, central defence or also in midfield, made 246 appearances in all competitions for the Cumbrians following his move from Gateshead in 2019.

Mellish, a key member of the Carlisle side that won promotion to League One in 2023, was ever-present in the third tier last season and featured against the Latics in the first round of the FA Cup in November.

He follows Josh Robinson, Joe Hungbo and Will Goodwin as new arrivals at Wigan since the beginning of the month.

“It feels unbelievable. It has finally happened and I am delighted to be here,” Mellish told Wigan’s official website., external

“Growing up, Wigan was always a Premier League club so I know how big the club is and I am dying to get started and show everyone what I have got.”
