- But the England man is still way behind India legend Sachin Tendulkar in top spot
Joe Root is now the eighth most prolific batsman in the history of Test cricket after moving ahead of Shivnarine Chanderpaul on Sunday.
Root passed Chanderpaul’s career total of 11,869 runs moments after registering his 94th Test half-century for England.
The 33-year-old Yorkshireman’s latest 50-plus knock came against Chanderpaul’s old side as England looked to set the West Indies a big target in the second Test at Trent Bridge.
Root had been out for just 14 in the first innings, but he reached a half-century off 91 balls with his second go.
Chanderpaul scored 11,867 runs in 280 Test innings between 1994 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s outing with the bat for Root was his 260th innings in Test cricket.
The next batsman ahead of Root in the all-time rankings is another West Indies icon in the form of Brian Lara.
Lara scored 11,953 runs in 232 innings between 1990 and 2006.
India legend Sachin Tendulkar looks set to hold onto top spot for a long while yet with his tally of 15,921 runs.
