Jamie Carragher heaped heavy praise on Mohamed Salah after the Egyptian scored twice in Liverpool’s 3-2 comeback win over Southampton on Sunday.

It came after the former Liverpool defender criticised Salah for his controversial interview outside St. Mary’s Stadium after the game, where he mentioned that he feels he is ‘more out than in’, amid stagnant contract negotiations.

Carragher commented: ‘I must say, I am very disappointed with Mo Salah. That interview last night… Liverpool have Real Madrid in midweek and Manchester City next weekend. That’s the story for Liverpool right now.

‘If he continues to put comments out or his agent continues to put cryptic tweets out, that is selfish. That’s thinking about themselves and not the football club.’

Salah has scored 10 goals and given six assists in 12 league games this season, as he is enjoying another monumental campaign in terms of output.

Since joining Liverpool in 2017 from Roma, The 32-year-old has scored 223 goals in 367 matches. Carragher argued that Salah resides among the club’s greatest players ever and ranked him as their fifth best player in history.

Salah has not yet put pen to paper on a new contract, while his current deal expires next year

‘I would say that Mo Salah is in the top five players to ever play for Liverpool,’ Carragher said.

‘I would go Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Ian Rush and I’d put Mo Salah in fifth position.

‘That’s how highly I rate him. That’s how special this guy is.’

Regarding contract negotiations, Salah complained that Liverpool have not offered him a new deal – with his current one expiring at the end of the season – and he gave no clear indication that he wanted to stay at the club, insisting that the decision is not up to him.

‘I’m probably more out than in. You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this.

‘But in the end it is not in my hands. As I said, it is December and I haven’t received anything yet about my future,’ he said.

As reported by Mail Sport, Liverpool turned down a lucrative £150million bid for Salah from Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad in 2023.

If no agreement is reached on a new contract between both parties by the end of the season, Liverpool fans will endure the sight of their fifth all-time top scorer leaving Anfield on a free transfer.
