Grantchester continued on Wednesday, with the beloved ITV drama airing some emotional scenes as Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) told Geordie Keating (Robson Green) he would be leaving the village.

Fans have been preparing for the Reverend’s exit, but it seems many weren’t expecting to be as moved by the scenes as they were following the sad ending.

When Davenport revealed he’d be leaving, Keating’s response was to lash out at his friend, labelling him “selfish” for taking a new role at a parish in Newcastle.

The two were involved in a heated exchange, with Davenport pleading for Keating’s blessing.

“I love this place, I love having a family here, and you, especially you,” he said candidly.

“But I don’t want to end up here in 30 years and realise I missed my chance. This new parish… I can really help people, I can rock some boats.

“I’m not really rocking any boats here am I? I hope I can have your blessing.”

An upset Keating refused, responding: “You’re being selfish, putting yourself first like you always do. You’re not giving a damn about those of us left behind.”

He went on: “What about Cathy? She loves having Bonnie around, and what about Ernie?

“Taking him out of school, away from the people he loves, it’s not on. So, no, you do not have my blessing.”

However, in a poignant moment at the last minute, the pair hugged and had a moving conversation, explaining they loved each other. Keating even admitted Davenport made him proud “every day”.

Responding to the tear-jerking scenes, fans talked about how emotional they’d become as they shared their thoughts on the episode on social media.

“Gosh I’ve gone #Grantchester,” one penned on X.

“I’m 29 years old and it’s been a while since I cried at a TV show as hard as that. #Grantchester,” a second confessed.

“Filling up, here #Grantchester,” echoed another, with someone else adding: “#Will and #Geordie’s friendship is beautiful. And watching Will leave is the heartbreaking evening I was completely not ready for #Grantchester.”

“Am crying my eyes out at #Grantchester Grantchester!!” one fan shared.

“Still sobbing @tombrittney. Knew it would be hard to say goodbye but not that hard #Grantchester,” a different X user posted.

Someone else added: “I didn’t want to. I hoped I wouldn’t. But in the end I had to. Cried my eyes out at the end of this episode of #Grantchester Farewell to #WillDavenport.” (sic)

Ravi Nair will make his debut appearance as Alphy Kotteram in next week’s ITV Grantchester

Fans will soon be introduced to the new Reverend as Rishi Nair makes his debut appearance as Alphy Kotteram.

Speaking recently to GB News and other media, the actor touched on the difficulties his character initially faces.

Explaining how his race would be a part of an upcoming plot, Nair explained: “This was the first time I did any period [drama] and, for me, it was really important that we did address that and that it was played out in the series,” he detailed.

“I think we would have really missed the trick and not played the truth of society if I just came into 1962 Rochester and everyone’s just absolutely lovely to me and no one bats an eyelid because that’s not what would have happened.”
