Sir Keir Starmer has been criticised after it appeared that the flag of St George was not given to supporters on Downing Street despite Union Jacks, Saltire, and Red Dragon flags being handed out.

The new Prime Minister entered the official residence after winning a landslide majority over the Conservatives, leading to the resignation of Rishi Sunak.

Staffers were spotted handing out union flags in Downing St for the Labour staffers and volunteers ready to welcome Sir Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.

However, some GB News viewers noticed that the Saltire or the Welsh Dragon were handed out but not the flag of St George nor the flag of Northern Ireland.

Monica Holton said: “The flag waving said it all. He spoke about the four nations but I only saw the Scottish and Welsh Flags. What happened to England and Northern Ireland?”

Keith Garland said: “Plenty of Scottish and Welsh Flags but no English flags. Even the Union flags were upside down. Says a lot about Starmer and Labour.”

On X, formerly Twitter, one person asked: “Why is no one flying a wee St George cross flag in Downing Street? I see the Saltire, Welsh dragon & Union Flag but no English flags? Seems quite poor optics.” Another asked: “Where’s the St George Cross?”

A third added: “Where’s the f***ing Cross of St George flags? Only been Prime Minister for five minutes and he’s f****d up.”

“Just watching the group in Downing Street waving flags, fair enough but where’s the English flag,” another chimed in. “They have Union flags, Saltires and Welsh. Where’s the Cross of St George? Aye, start as you mean to go on right enough.”

GB News has approached the Cabinet Office and the Labour Party for a comment.

In his maiden speech as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer promised a Government “unburdened by doctrine” and to fight for people’s belief in a brighter future.

He said: “If I asked you now whether you believe that Britain will be better for your children, I know too many of you would say no. So, my Government will fight every day until you believe again.”

“From now on, you have a Government unburdened by doctrine, guided only by the determination to serve your interest, to defy quietly those who have written our country off. You have given us a clear mandate and we will use it to deliver change, to restore service and respect to politics.”

Sir Keir Starmer also paid tribute to Rishi Sunak’s “hard work.”

He said: “I want to thank the outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak. His achievement as the first British-Asian prime minister of our country, the extra effort that that will have required, should not be underestimated by anyone. And we paid tribute to that today.

“We also recognise the dedication and hard work he brought to his leadership.”
