A section of Seaham promenade in County Durham has collapsed overnight, forcing the closure of part of the coastal walkway.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, has left a large opening in the promenade deck near Featherbed Rocks, with concrete slabs visibly displaced and angled upwards.
Durham County Council has closed the southern section of the promenade in response to the structural failure.
The affected area spans from the steps at North Road to Featherbed Rocks, with authorities implementing immediate safety measures to protect the public.

A Durham County Council spokesperson said: “For public safety, the southern section of the promenade, near to Featherbed Rocks, has been closed.”
The council confirmed they are currently assessing the situation to determine appropriate action.
“We are currently assessing the situation with a view to carrying out appropriate repairs as soon as possible. Further updates will be provided,” the council statement added.
While the affected section remains closed, officials have confirmed that the rest of the promenade remains accessible to the public.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in the area, including Seaham, which remains in effect until 10am on Friday.
