The start of a new year is the perfect time to rethink our homes and interior design trends for 2026 signal a welcome move towards spaces that feel genuinely lived-in, warm and personal.

This year, it’s time to say goodbye to cold minimalism and stark lines. In its place comes a richer, more layered look that celebrates colour, texture and individuality.

Whether you’re refreshing a room with a new paint shade or planning a full redesign, 2026 is all about creating interiors that feel like home and making smart design choices can also help add value to your property.

Living rooms, in particular, are set to take centre stage. They offer the ideal canvas for injecting personality, from bold paint choices to textured fabrics and meaningful finishing touches that turn a room into the heart of the home. Here are the four key interior design trends to follow in 2026.

It’s time to say goodbye to cold minimalism and stark lines in 2026

1. Terracotta tiles

No longer reserved for Mediterranean kitchens, terracotta tiles are emerging as a major trend for 2026.

Their warm, sun-baked tones instantly evoke summer holidays and relaxed living. Used in bold checked patterns or paired with white and earthy wall colours, they add depth and character to a space.

With proper sealing, terracotta is ideal for bathrooms and hallways as well as kitchens, bringing a grounded, authentic feel that works beautifully in both period and modern homes.

2. Goodbye grey

After years of dominance, grey is finally on its way out. In 2026, it’s being replaced by olive greens, deep chocolate browns and rich burgundies.

These shades create a cocooning effect, making rooms feel intimate and inviting. Browns offer a softer alternative to harsh black, while aubergines and burgundies bring a timeless, heritage feel.

Colour drenching remains popular, with walls, woodwork and even fixtures painted in deep jewel tones or complemented by rich antique woods. If that feels a step too far, clay tones and warmer neutrals are an easy way to tap into the trend.

3. Statement lights and mirrors

Mirrors are no longer just practical; in 2026, they become art.

Oversized or irregularly shaped designs are being used as focal points, adding interest while also reflecting light and making smaller rooms feel bigger.

Lighting follows the same rule. No longer purely functional, statement lighting is designed to be seen. Layered lighting adds warmth, and in dining rooms, bold pendants are taking pride of place above the table.

4. Lived-in, not show home

Perhaps the most refreshing trend of all: homes that actually feel lived in.

2026 embraces imperfection, with interiors that reflect real lives rather than picture-perfect show homes. ‘Purposeful clutter’ and collections of meaningful objects, from artwork to travel finds, are encouraged.

Decorating should never be about creating a flawless snapshot. The best interiors are those that make you feel relaxed, comforted, and genuinely happy to be at home, and that’s a trend that never goes out of style.
