With the seemingly endless rain, snow and wind that the UK is blessed with during the winter months, many Brits are looking for a warmer place to visit.

There is a European country that happens to boast ‘the world’s most beautiful port’ and is relatively mild when home might feel cold.

Around a three hour flight away, Malta is often dubbed the ‘jewel of the Mediterranean’ because of its great weather and beautiful landscapes.

The tiny island is only 17 miles long and can be crossed in just 45 minutes.

What’s more, Ryanair offer very affordable flights to Malta, starting at just £14.99.

Accommodation is reasonable and easy to find too, with options on Booking.com available from around £180 for a week, based on two adults sharing in March.

The temperature ranges from 12°C to 17°C in March, whereas the UK can usually reaches highs of 11°C.

By April, Malta is between 15°C to 20°C and over the year sees 3,000 hours of sunshine, the The Express reports.

There is plenty to explore across Malta in the mild weather, and the island is packed with history.

From neolithic temples to an impressive coastline, the capital, Valletta, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Valletta was recently named the very best in The 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards by Condé Nast Traveller.

Surrounded by impressive stone walls, the city of Valletta takes the crown and was awarded a near-perfect score of 97.33.

The location boasts ornate Baroque architecture and visitors can grab a beer within Valletta’s fortress walls for around €4.29 (£3.73), according to cost of living website Numbeo.

Condé Nast describes how ‘narrow undulating lanes extend across the centre’, and there’s plenty to do within the city’s walls.

Valletta is also a busy port where tourists disembark for a day spent wandering its winding, picturesque streets.

It came out as the world’s most beautiful port, in a survey that used eye-tracking technology on cruise fans by AllClear Travel Insurance.

Researchers from the cruise travel cover specialists conducted the study with 100 cruise passengers to help them discover the world’s most scenic ports.

The software monitored which ports caught tourists’ eyes the quickest and for the longest amount of time. And the most easy on the eye proved to be Maltese capital, Valletta.

Meanwhile, Malta overall ranked third in Travel Supermaket’s list of the popular island destination for 2026.
