While fashion comes down to personal style, some clothes are simply more flattering than others.

A style influencer who encourages women to channel “French chic style” to look and feel their very best, revealed she would never wear a blouse with large floral prints, wide-legged cropped trousers and two-strap sandals together.

Marie-Anne Lecoeur (who goes by The French Chic Expert on YouTube) took to the sharing platform to advise women on how they can go from “frumpy” to “chic” with a few simple style hacks.

The fashionista said: “I am over 60 and I have just as much get-up-and-go as I used to at 30 – well, almost. So if you feel your get-up-and-go has got up and gone, let’s get chic.”

Wearing a loose floral blouse with purple, pink and orange oversized prints, cropped purple trousers and two-strap sandals, the style guru explained why this look is a no-no.

She said: “Sadly, this is a type of outfit I see many women wear. It does absolutely nothing for you – it hides your best bits and creates worse bits.

“It does not make you feel beautiful – I think it probably sucks the life out of you.

“As soon as I put on this outfit, I wanted to cry. I feel frumpy, I look frumpy and really, I don’t feel great.”

While there is nothing wrong with wearing purple to inject a pop of colour into an outfit, the expert suggested that it’s important to beware of dated prints. Marie-Anne said: “It looks like my old aunt’s curtains from the 70s”.

The fashionista pointed out that her blouse was square-shaped, meaning it not only didn’t flatter her figure but made her appear more “square”.

According to the expert, this, plus the “business” of the colour and print, makes for a frumpy blouse.

Moving on to her wide, square, cropped purple trousers, the style enthusiast said: “This is exactly opposite of what I advise my ladies to wear. It’s going to make you look wider and shorter, with short legs.”

Speaking about the drawstring of the trousers, Marie-Anne pointed out that this creates unncessary “bulk”.

She continued: “The crotch is going to give you a bottom that is loose and flappy – not something that we want when we’re over 50 and 60.”

Finally, Marie-Anne addressed her two-strap shoes, stating: “I see so many women wearing this type of outfit with these type of shoes – because hey, they’re comfortable.

“But if the outfit wasn’t bad enough, the whole outfit with these is just awful. I think these shoes make your feet look like hobbit’s feet – not a good look.” She added that she would “rather be barefoot than wear these”.

Showcasing a more chic alternative, Marie-Claire modelled some high-waisted, wide-legged trousers that made her look “taller and slimmer”. She selected off-white to contrast the printed blouse, which she then tucked in.

To improve the outfit further, Marie-Claire ditched her garish blouse for a more dainty, feminine, modern style that boasted much smaller prints in pink, white and black.

The fashionista recommended completing the look with some chic shoes, including her “frump-buster” open-toe white strappy sandals.

Another fashion guru named the print that’s associated with getting older, urging women to avoid it if they want to stay young and stylish.
