A great skin care regime is crucial if you want to improve your complexion, but supplementation can also be an effective route to go down.
A former model and beauty enthusiast took to TikTok to share the supplement that can help to protect against UV rays and boost hydration, collagen and elasticity. She advised women to consider taking astaxanthin.
Vicky Derosa said on the sharing platform: “Did you know that there is a supplement that can help with the quality of your skin?
“Look, everyone stops me, everywhere I go – I mean, I’m so grateful – but people ask me what I use on my skin. They ask what moisturiser I use, what makeup.

“I’m turning 60 and I don’t use Botox or fillers or anything like that. I do believe in face oils, I do believe in natural products and I do lots of natural masks.”
But another secret to Vicky’s enviable skin is one unexpected supplement.
The ageless beauty explained that she takes astaxanthin for her eyesight, using a product by Terranova.
A health specialist from Landys Chemist said: “Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic activities which may offer promising benefits to support our eyes.”
Referencing a study published in the National Library of Medicine, the expert continued: “Several studies have indicated that due to its unique molecular structure and properties, Astaxanthin may have numerous positive and beneficial effects on eye health including protection against oxidative stress, improvement in eye strain, protection against UV light as well as reducing inflammation in the eyes.”
However, Vicky recently learnt that her eye-boosting supplement may also have skin-boosting properties.
She said: “Just the other day I was looking at research about this supplement and it talks about how this supplement actually helps protect your skin against the UV rays of the sun.
“It actually helps with hydration, helps with building collagen and with the elasticity of the skin. And ‘What’s the supplement?’, you ask: astaxanthin.”
Vicky shared that her astaxanthin is combined with bilberry and lutein for her eyes. But skin enthusiasts should consider looking into astaxanthin.
“I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about this,” she said. “I was looking at all the research about what astaxanthin actually does for the skin – and I’ve been taking this daily for years for my insight.”

The skin care enthusiast urged women: “You have to take a look at it because I feel like no one talks about this.”
Nutritional therapist Gabriela Peacock stocks astaxanthin at GP Nutrition and it’s one of her “bestsellers”.
The key benefits are “beauty and radiance”, “longevity and pro-age”, “immunity and antioxidants” and “energy and vitality”.
According to the expert, astaxanthin has a myriad of positive effects on the body. It “enhances natural radiance and supports the health of your hair, skin and nails, stimulates cellular health to promote longevity, supports the function of your immune system and delivers antioxidants, and supports energy levels for vitality and reduces fatigue.
Experts at Drugs.com stated: “Recommended dosages range from 4mg-12mg a day depending on the desired effect. 4mg daily has been shown to have positive effects in reducing inflammation but up to 12mg a day provides more of a therapeutic dose for those in need of higher levels of antioxidants. Astaxanthin is a fat-soluble carotenoid that should be with a meal containing fat for optimal absorption.”
The website also contains information on safety – including pregnancy and nursing – side effects and toxicities. Experts advised: “Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure the information displayed on this page applies to your personal circumstances.”
Before taking any supplements, you must consult your doctor for their expertise on whether you should take them and in what amount, as it may not be suitable for you.
