Concealer is a staple in pretty much every makeup bag but according to one expert, the type you’re using could be ageing you prematurely.

Makeup artist Glam Girl Gabi took to YouTube with some helpful makeup tips for women over 50. She advised ladies in middle age and above to ditch their full coverage, matte concealer for something more creamy and hydrating.

Demonstrating her tips on a 58-year-old woman, Gabi used the Jane Iredale Purematch Liquid Concealer.

The expert instructed women over 50 to be “very strategic” about how they apply concealer and what type of concealer they use.

She told women to apply it to the hollow zone by the inner corners of their eyes, as well as down the nose. They can extend this out a little bit to below the eyes, until just under the iris.

Gabi explained that there’s “a lot of movement” under the eyes and around the outer corner, so it’s best if there’s “as little amount of product as possible” in these areas.

The makeup artist revealed that if there’s too much concealer here, it will settle into fine lines “because cream products like to go into creases”.

To apply the concealer fully, ladies should stipple the product (using small spots or marks) with a brush and “share it out”.

Then, they should “build out coverage in any of the areas that have darkness”. Gabi stressed that the formula of your concealer is “everything when we get older”.

She revealed: “If you use a formula that’s too full-coverage and too matte, you will look 10 years older.

“It’s crazy – the concealer will make you look worse than without it. So you need something very creamy and hydrating, but it can’t be too creamy that it falls into all the crevices.

Gabi provided another top tip for women over 50 wearing under-eye concealer. She said: “What does concealer do? Concealer creases, right?

“If you don’t set your concealer, it’s going to crease. But you don’t want to set it immediately either because if you do, you actually run the risk of it getting a little bit gummy.”

To avoid this, the expert advised women over 50 to apply their concealer and then add the end of their makeup routine, go back to it to “smooth out the creases” and then “set it lightly with a very finely milled powder”.
