From over-washing to using the wrong water temperature, many Britons unknowingly damage their locks through improper hair care routines.

But adopting good habits is one of the easiest ways to promote your scalp’s health and appearance, an expert has pointed out.

Chris Wenzel, who goes by the Blowout Professor online, warned about common mistakes people make with scalp stimulation.

He said: “Scalp stimulation needs to be part of your wash routine, it’s going to improve blood flow to your scalp and the hair follicle.

The scalp is easier to irritate than normal skin

“That blood flow brings nutrients and those nutrients promote healthy hair and hair growth, and both of those things are good.

“But like everything hair, there is a right and wrong way to do this.”

When it comes to scalp stimulation, Chris insists that less is more. He added: “If someone recommends some complicated hour-long massage routine with a wooden brush, they mean you harm.

“Your scalp is way easier to irritate than your normal skin. When it gets irritated, it can be really hard to get things back to normal.

“If anything hurts or turns your scalp red, those things are much more likely to hurt you than they are to help you. There really is no upside to doing those things.”

Overstimulating the scalp can irritate you if you do too much in a single sitting.

This irritation subsequently triggers a chain of events that are unfavourable for the appearance of hair.

Scratching, for instance, could disrupt the oil layer and add fungus to the scalp, both of which result in dandruff and flaking.

The skin typically sheds in order to get rid of the irritant, yet scratching will simply expose the scalp to more of the irritating agent.

In a separate clip, the hair care enthusiast advised against combing hair too.

Chris claimed countless women ruin their hair by committing this simple mistake, adding: “Combs are one of the best ways to ruin your hair.

“The problem is that most people learned to do their hair from their mum, and she’s just teaching you what her mum taught her 30 years ago – which is super outdated.

“You probably don’t dress like your grandmother, and you don’t watch the same TV shows and movies as her. So why are you doing your hair like your grandmother?”

Chris urged women “never” to use a comb to detangle hair and they risk ripping it out.
