An expert dog trainer has revealed the top dog breeds he recommends families should avoid owning.
Garett Wing, the man behind the TikTok page, American Standard K9, shared the advice to his 3.6m TikTok followers. The American law enforcement veteran with 18 years’ experience at the City of Miami Police Department turned professional dog trainer mentioned three types of dogs that families with young children should shy away from.
Garett hailed the Tibetan Mastiff as a “monster of a dog”, putting it in third place. The dog can grow to have a weight of around 68kg and height of 26 inches, SurreyLive reports.

Garret said: “[It] is capable of killing an entire pack of wolves. So do you think you need that in your home with small children? Not necessarily.” He also pointed out their stubborn nature, which can present training challenges, before adding: “Beautiful animals, probably not for you.”
He then turned his attention to the Great Dane, ranked second on his list. Despite acknowledging them to be “really sweet dogs” that can make “amazing pets”, he warned that their sheer size makes them a “complete lifestyle changer”. Great Danes can weigh close to 91kg and reach a stature of 32 inches.
Garret said: “You have to basically rearrange your whole house, even when it comes getting a crate and taking them places. Where’s your coffee table, and where are you going to put your cup? We’re talking about a dog that is just too big for most homes.”
Finally, identified the “number one dog breed we do not recommend for families” as the Cane Corso. These dogs can reach around 50kg in weight and stand up to 28 inches tall.
He elaborated: “That is too much dog for about 99.9% of folks. And that’s coming from us, not only as professional dog trainers, but owners of the Cane Corso. They are absolute battle tanks and you don’t need that in your suburban neighbourhood.”
