I was a millionaire snooker world champion – but I splashed my money on supercars and trips around the globe in order to feel ‘pressure’ again

  • Luca Brecel shot to the top of the snooker game after winning a title in May
  • However, he admitted to splashing his prize money on fancy cars in recent times

Snooker star Luca Brecel has admitted to splashing his money on supercars in a bid to feel a ‘bit of pressure’ in recent times.

Brecel became a recognised name in the sport after winning this year’s World Snooker Championship by defeating Mark Selby 18-15 in the final.

Following his victory at the Crucible, Brecel pocketed £500,000 ($622,000) in one of the most lucrative pay-outs of his professional career.

However, he has since revealed that he’s splashed out on luxury cars and trips around the globe in a bid to feel a ‘bit of pressure’ again.

According to The Sun, Brecel said: ‘I bought two more cars this week, so I went from a millionaire to a non-millionaire.

‘It was a conscious decision to buy the cars and maybe feel that bit of pressure again, to recreate the feeling I had of just starting my career.’

Brecel has previously shared pictures onto his social media accounts of his Ferrari 488, worth an estimated £350k.

He’s also enjoyed trips around the globe and recently admitted that he and his partner have visited ’14 countries in four months’ as he enjoyed his winnings.

During one trip to Dubai, Brecel shared multiple snaps of the couple at high-end restaurant Hakkasan – where dishes can cost up to £300.

In the same interview, the 28-year-old also admitted that he’s been facing problems with his mindset, as he claimed: ‘I didn’t go lazy, but I just didn’t feel that hunger or motivation going from tournament to tournament.

‘I don’t like that feeling and I had to change something. I wasn’t feeling any pressure any more. I was just playing and if I lost I was happy to be home. It’s not a good mindset to have.’

The Belgian went on to assert that he’s not worried about consistency and claimed that he has time to get it right.

He continued: ‘I’m still young and I feel like one day I’m going to get to number one anyway.

‘I’ve been one match away and one frame away from world number one. I think my best chance was going to the Wuhan Open and I didn’t, so that shows you how much it keeps me busy. But it would be nice to tick it off, I’m not going to lie.’

After his impressive win over Selby in May, Brecel’s home town of Maasmechelen hosted a big party in honour of the Belgian, who made history by becoming the first person from mainland Europe to win the World Snooker Championship.

‘History has been made! Luca Brecel crowned himself the first non-English speaking World Snooker Champion on May 1,’ an Instagram post from Maasmechelen’s official account said.

‘The Belgian Bullet defeated the Englishman Mark Selby in a blood strengthening final with a magnificent performance.’

Banners are being put up around the town to celebrate Brecel's historic win at the Crucible

They have been posting several images on their Instagram asking whether members of the community 'have seen their banners yet?'

‘And that deserves a MaasMagnifiek party! The local government is organising a great folk’s party on Sunday afternoon 14 May to celebrate the new national hero together with all the residents.’

The town, which is situated one hours drive of Brussels in the north-east region of Belgium, has a population of approximately just under 40,000 people, and celebrated the historic achievements of their new world champion, by awarding him with honorary citizenship.

‘Honorary citizenship. A historic achievement also deserves a historic award. The Schepencollege will therefore also nominate Luca Brecel as an honorary citizen to the city council.’
