A schlumbergera, or Christmas cactus, can brighten your home year-round, but they are particularly popular in the winter.

Speaking exclusively to GB News, experts shared how to keep these looking their best.

The plant needs plenty of water and the right lighting conditions to thrive, according to plant expert at Plantum Anastasia Borisevich.

She stated: “Who says you can only be in the Christmas mood in December? Add some festive accents to the grey routine of everyday life with the Christmas cactus.

“It’s a tropical plant, so it differs from regular cacti. The plant needs abundant watering, high humidity, and filtered light or partial shade.

“Moreover, it doesn’t tolerate water high in lime, so make sure to use warm, settled or filtered water. Mind you, if you want to make the Christmas cactus flower, you’ll need to create special conditions for the plant.”

The best conditions for the cacti are where they can get enough light and humidity.

Anastasia continued: “This plant requires bright, diffused sunlight. Place the pot on an east- or west-facing windowsill.

“If it’s located next to a south-facing window, shield the plant from direct sunlight in the afternoon. Give it a drink once the topsoil dries off by about a 0.5–1 in (1–3cm). Reduce watering when the plant stops flowering. Keep it in a cool place until spring.

“Schlumbergera prefers high humidity. You can boost humidity by placing a container filled with water near the pot.”

Care needs will change depending on the time of year and the plant should be fed and watered regularly from November.

The expert said: “At the beginning of November, start feeding and watering it regularly. The optimal temperature should be around 66–72°F (19–22°C) during the day and 60–68°F (15–20°C) at night.

“To help the plant form strong buds, water it with a solution of calcium nitrate. Don’t rotate the pot during bud formation and blooming.

“It’s best to leave the plant be and not move it anywhere.” During the spring and summer, the plants do not need as much attention, according to the plant expert.

She continued: “From March to September, feed the plant with a complex mineral fertiliser formulated for cacti once every two weeks.

“Provide your Schlumbergera with lower temperatures during its dormant period from September to November to ensure abundant blooming. Without a proper rest period, your plant can’t form flower buds.”
