Flights can quickly become expensive, especially long-haul, international journeys far away.

One crafty traveller found a way to cut the costs, and managed to save $1,000 (£742) on their ticket with an easy trick.

They explained their method on Reddit and revealed they simply used a different language and currency option.

The frequent flier was looking for tickets from Santiago Airport (SCL) to Williamsport, in Pennsylvania (IPT).

Originally, they were priced between $1,700 (£1,262) and $2,000 (£1,484) on the airline’s website for a round trip in business class.

‘Google flights showed the price for $970 (£720) round trip. However. Once going to the carriers website (Latam), the price is actually ~$1700-$2000 round trip for business,’ they explained.

‘The ~$900 displayed price was for one leg. I used a laptop and the app to see if I could get the $1000 fare, both nearly $2k (£1,484).’

During the search, a link appeared that took the holidaymaker to the Spanish version of the website.

They continued: ‘Not sure how but a link to the Spanish language/Chilean currency site popped up. Did NOT use a VPN.’

The passenger realised that booking through a different language and currency would save them a lot of money.

A round trip for their route turned out to be under $1,000 in business class if they paid in Chilean Pesos.

‘Of course I booked it,’ the passenger added.

The holidaymaker was pleasantly surprised by the trick, sharing that they haven’t had the same success with a VPN.

The post attracted hordes of comments and some shared their own tricks.

One person penned: ‘It can also change when you switch currencies. I once saved ~$900 flying from Japan to France by paying in JPY rather than USD.’

There are plenty of ways to cut the costs of a trip and nine out of 10 holidaymakers are taking steps to reduce their expenses.

The top hacks used by holidaymakers across the UK have been revealed, according to a survey. The first tip? Book early.

It’s a simple yet effective tactic – which is why it’s no surprise 46 per cent of holidaymakers do so.

Secondly, you can travel outside of peak holiday seasons to get a better deal.

Travelling midweek is just as popular, with 45 per cent doing so.
