Morning Live presenter Helen Skelton took an unexpected swipe at her co-star Gethin Jones as she poked fun at his dress sense on BBC Breakfast.

Helen and Gethin returned to screens on Monday morning (October 21) for the latest episode of their much-loved daytime show. Before the programme kicked off, BBC Breakfast presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent wanted to discover what viewers could expect from the programme once it started at 9:30am.

Providing viewers with a run down on what was on offer, Helen mentioned that they would be talking to gardner Mark Lane on how to keep your plants alive in the winter with clothes. Appearing in the studio, Mark held up a jumper and said: “Pull out your old pullovers, jumpers and jackets because we’ll be using those to keep your greeny alive.”

As the camera panned back to Gethin and Helen, Gethin jokingly mentioned the jumper Mark was holding in his hand and said: “Why do they always go into my room to get…”

Helen jumped in at the chance to take a swipe at her colleague’s appearance and said: “Because they’re old and tatty and need a new lease of life.”

But Gethin wasn’t ruffled by her words as he agreed replying: “That’s fair,” before continuing with what else was coming up on the show and added: “Straight from the Strictly ball room, nothing tatty about this one Anton Du Beke gives us the lowdown on last night’s elimination.”

Last month Helen and Gethin experienced another awkward moment live on air. The moment occurred when the pair wrapped up a segment about challenging council tax with consumer journalist Felicity Hannah.

Closing that section of the show, Gethin made reference to Bryan Adam’s hit single and said: “Everything I do, I do it for you.” But Helen thought he was talking to Felicity and responded: “You made Felicity really uncomfortable then. She didn’t know where you were going with that.”

Gethin replied: “I was looking at you. That was the awkward bit.” Helen quipped: “More so now though, eh?” and jokingly moved her chair further away from him.

Gethin’s burst into song came as Felicity said for viewers to understand council tax someone has to cast their minds back to 1991. She told him: “Bryan Adams was in the charts with Everything I Do (I Do It For You)”, which Gethin called a “good reference”.

BBC Breakfast airs everyday from 6am on BBC One and Morning Live is on at 9.30am
