Ten Parliamentary constituencies have led the charge in demanding a General Election be called to challenge Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Government.

A petition insisting on an early vote reached nearly 1,060,000 signatures, with the notion set to be debated in the Commons on Monday, January 12.

“We want an immediate general election to be held. We think the majority need and want change,” read the notice on the petition.

Evidently, the public agreed, as 1,059,231 put their names forward in support and smashed the 100,000 signatures required to have the issue addressed by lawmakers.

The debate will take place in Westminster Hall from 4.30pm and will allow MPs to grill the Government directly on this issue.

Among the tidal wave of dissatisfied Britons, 10 seats contributed the most to the huge final tally, with thousands of locals joining the push.

Topping the list was Brentwood and Ongar in Essex, with 3,210 constituents signing the petition.

It is the seat of Conservative MP Alex Burghart, the current Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Next was Castle Point, also in Essex, with 3,098 people making their opinions known.

Tory Dame Rebecca Harris MP represents the area.

Sir James Cleverly’s seat of Braintree came in third, with 2,995 of the former Conservative Home and Foreign Secretary signing the petition.

Rayleigh and Wickford, under Mark Francois MP, had 2,950 signatories.

2,929 people in Maldon demanded an early election, the seat of Sir John Whittingdale MP.

In a particularly troubling development for Sir Keir, the next two top constituencies are currently controlled by Labour MPs.

Portsmouth North saw 2,910 support the petition in the backyard of Labour’s Amanda Martin MP.

In Burnley, represented by Labour’s Oliver Ryan MP, 2,862 demanded a chance to unseat the Government.

Perhaps less surprisingly, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s constituency came next.

The seaside Essex seat produced 2,854 signatories.

In Hampshire, the constutuency of Havant, under Conservative Alan Mak MP, saw 2,840 put their name forward.

Epping Forest, represented by Dr Neil Hudson MP, produced 2,796 signatures.

The majority of the top 10 seats were found in Essex

The area shot to national attention after demonstrators took to the streets to protest the placement of asylum seekers at the Bell Hotel in Epping following the sexual assault committed by one of the migrants.

Responding to the petition, the Government said that it was “elected on a mandate of change at the July 2024 general election”.

“Our full focus is on fixing the foundations, rebuilding Britain, and restoring public confidence in government,” it added.

The statement informed that: “The Prime Minister can call a general election at a time of their choosing by requesting a dissolution of Parliament from the Sovereign within the five-year life of a Parliament.”
