Trees make a great addition to any garden, giving a splash of greenery and privacy in your outdoor space.

As British temperatures drop, this could be a great time to tend to your plants and trees.

Doing this in autumn can put your trees and plants in good stead for the following year, according to gardening expert Mark Brewer.

He told GB News: “In autumn, plants in the northern hemisphere focus on energy conservation and preparing for rest.”

Look at how often you are watering your plants and trees, and think about whether it is time to fertilise and mulch in the garden.

The expert said: “As the water cools off, make sure to adjust your watering schedule to avoid overwatering. Is it time to fertilise? Many trees and plants, including grass, enjoy some fertilisation before going dormant.

“Check out your plant’s specific needs and, if appropriate, use a low-nitrogen, slow-release fertiliser. Be sure not to over-fertilise.”

Another thing to do is consider mulching as this will protect plants and trees from harsh frost in the winter.

Mark explained: “Add mulch to trees and garden beds to help your plants retain moisture and heat.”

If you are looking to expand your garden, now can be a good time to plant these for results in spring.

He added: “Autumn is the perfect time to plant most trees. If you plant now, you are looking at cherry blossoms in the spring.”

When it comes to caring for your garden at this time of year, homeowners also need to watch out for small animals, as they can look for shelter among foliage outdoors.

Training manager at Critter Control Meg Pearson suggested keeping your outdoor space clear at this time of year to prevent this from happening.

The expert told GB News: “Be sure to keep your lawn well kept in autumn, to deter local animals from approaching your home and garden.

“Many small animals, like rodents, thrive in unkempt yard space, so be sure to be diligent with raking the leaves off your lawn as the season changes and the leaves begin to fall to the ground.

“You should also keep your yard clear of any sticks, tree branches or other brush that may begin to populate on your property as autumn comes around, as these are all things that small animals will take refuge in and around, as they approach your garden.”
