Gabby Logan has defended herself on social media after using the words ‘c**k up’ twice while reporting on the Olympics for the BBC on Friday.

The 51-year-old had been chatting with the BBC Athletics panel, discussing the USA”s performance in the 4x100m.

Team USA had been the favourites to reign supreme but ended up being disqualified following a mistake on a handover.

Canada were then able to capitalise by winning gold, with South Africa and Great Britain making up the other countries on the podium.

Logan said: “OK, we’ve just had a kind of spoiler alert if you’ve just joined us on BBC One because Michael said, especially the way the USA c**ked up, so let’s go back and see the whole of that 4x100m relay in the men’s final.”

She also used the words ‘c**k up’ once more, with fans taking to social media to criticise her choice of language.

Logan has, however, now taken to social media to defend herself.

She tweeted the words ‘good afternoon’ while accompanying her message with a picture showing the definition of ‘c**k up’.

“C**k up sounds rude but it isn’t,” the definition reads.

“C**k, in the sense of this term, means ‘stand up conspicuously’, ‘turn up at the edge’, ‘bend at an angle’ etc.

“This is the sense of the early usage of the term ‘c**k-up’ in the terms ‘c**k-up one’s ears’, ‘c**k-up one’s nose’.

“In the 17th and 18th centuries people were also often advised to ‘c**k up’ their bonnets, eyes and even legs.

“The expression ‘c**k a snooker’ also derives from that same sense of ‘c**k.”

Fans on social media have backed Logan and believe the criticism over her comments was ober the top.

One user said: “It was the perfect description of what happened! Own it…”

A second stated: “You get my vote Gabby.”

A third reacted by saying: “Because of social media and slang proper use of the English language is dying.”

And a fourth said: “Haha, I did have to rewind to check I heard right! Keep it going Gabby, your work continues to be superb.”

Meanwhile, Logan delivers a scathing assessment of Noah Lyles’ decision to race in the 200m despite testing positive for coronavirus.

The American secured bronze despite having Covid – and Logan said on Thursday that it was ‘selfish’ for him to compete.

“A decision to race is one thing when you have something like that, but also the introductions [stadium entrances]… really interesting, that that’s a waste of energy,” she said.

“There’s also, I imagine, some people thinking, ‘Well hang on, you’re going in the call room, you’re with people in a small space, there’s a potential to give other people Covid’.

“It seems to be quite a selfish decision.”
