Representing the 10 manufacturers who signed the letter, David Thorp, director of Stanton & Novelty Confectioners, said consumers do not realise the cheap Chinese products are “imported imitations of a great British tradition” as they are labelled as Blackpool rock.
He said the imports are having a “profound impact” on “businesses, livelihoods, and the local economy”
“The quality and integrity of British confectionery is unparalleled, built upon generations of craftsmanship and expertise”, the letter said.
It added: “Preserving the heritage and tradition of British confectionery is not only essential for our economy but also maintaining our cultural identity and pride”.
The rock makers are calling for Blackpool rock to be given geographical indication, which guarantees a product’s characteristics or reputation, authenticity and origin.
The manufacturers also said more skilled workers are needed as there are only 30 people in the UK have the skills to add letters through the rock.
