Britain’s high streets are continuing to be decimated by the ongoing wave of store closures with multiple household favourites set to shut down sites in July 2024.

Poundland, B&M, B&Q, The Works and the Co-Operative are among the retailers leaving communities this month in a blow to local economies. Here is a full list of the store closures taking place in the weeks ahead.

Card Factory

Shoppers in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, will need to find a new card and gift store with the closure of this retailer’ store on July 20. A Card Factory spokesperson said: “We continually review our estate of over 1,050 stores across the UK and Ireland.

“With our other Cumbernauld store just around the corner in the Antonine Shopping Centre on Forth Walk, (0.2 miles away), we have taken the decision to close our store on Teviot Street from July 20. We look forward to continuing to serve all our Cumbernauld customers and helping them celebrate their special life moments.”

The Works

On July 26, The Works shall close its store in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland after being left unable to agree to new terms on its lease.

A spokesperson for the arts and craft retailer explained: “This has been a great location for The Works, but sadly we have been unable to agree on suitable lease terms to stay. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this closure and would like to thank customers for shopping at the store over the years.”

One of the retailers shutting down sites this month is The Works THE WORKS

B&M

The discount retailer has confirmed the closure of its store on 4-20 Lord Street in Gainsborough, with shoppers having until July 17 to take advantage of any deals.

Despite this loss to the high street, a brand new B&M store will open in the same area, albeit in Marshalls Yard, on July 20.

B&Q

The popular DIY store will shut down its Sudbury site on the proposed date of July 20.

This is due to the expiration of the store’s lease with the landlord securing planning permission to develop the site.

Poundland

Two Poundland stores will close this month with the discount stores in Hitchin and Freeman Street, Grimsby, closing on July 16 and 20, respectively.

Speaking to the Sun, a spokesperson for the brand explained the reasoning behind the latter site’s closure: “We’ve been unable to secure a long-term lease that would enable us to keep trading which is disappointing.”

Robert Dyas

This hardware retailer has confirmed the closure of its “excellent” location in Castlepoint, Bournemouth, on July 20.

A Robert Dyas spokesperson confirmed: “The landlord has served notice on our Castle Point store, as they wanted to split the unit in two and sadly we were not able to mutually agree terms in bidding for one of those units.

“We will leave that store on July 20, and continue to look for an additional and appropriate new site in the area, as it is a strong performing store for us. The next nearest stores in the meantime, for our loyal Robert Dyas customers, are Poole and Christchurch.”

Co-op

The Co-Operative is shutting down one of its convenience stores on Weston Road in Meir, Stoke-on-Trent.

This particular store will no longer operate as of July 13.

Despite the closure, it is understood that staff have had their roles transferred over to a Nisa store in the area.
