Free airline seats for the obese are ‘bonkers’ and ‘patronising’ says weight loss coach

Former Fat Families presenter Steve Miller has said we should be encouraging obese people to ‘shrink their rotund rears’ rather than giving them free seats on aircraft.

His comments come following the announcement by Southwest Airlines earlier this week.

Speaking on GB News he said:

“I think it’s bonkers and what’s really interesting is this week, when I was talking to all of the wonderful fat people that I support, they were all saying it’s the most patronizing initiative that they’ve ever come across.

“They do not want a fat freebie, what they want is support. They want direct support. And also what they’re embarrassed about is that other passengers will probably have to subsidise their fat freebie.

“It takes away the R word, the ‘responsibility’ word. And actually, what we need to be doing is encouraging people to shrink their rotund rears, so to speak, which can be done.

“And by saying to people, no, you can have a fat seat on either side, because as I understand it, you can have two free seats if you’re too fat, it’s going to do absolutely nothing.

“Yes, it’s about encouraging people – encouraging people sometimes is about telling them to wake up and actually start eating more fresh air and sorting it out.

“Let’s remember, I’m the one that’s working directly with people every single day of the week. When it comes to genetics, that’s been poo pooed many, many times, many times.

“In fact, I’ve got a quote here, a professor from the University of London Genetics Institute explaining that the research of genetics aligned to obesity has been quite exaggerated.

“It’s absolutely baloney. No one is fat in a famine – there is always something you can do about it.

“We need to give people the aspiration and the hope and the motivation that they can lose weight rather than giving them a large helping of excuses to actually stay fat.”
