Football fans have leapt to the defence of England’s new manager Thomas Tuchel after the appointment of the 51-year-old German has sparked mixed reaction from supporters.

The Three Lions have agreed a deal for Tuchel take over from Lee Carsley in 2025, following the departure of Gareth Southgate this summer.

Prince William, Patron of the Football Association, hailed the announcement as “exciting times” for the national team, and wished Tuchel the “best of luck” in his new role.

However, former head of communications at the FA, Mike Parry, hailed the decision as a “dark day” for England.

Speaking to football fans outside Stamford Bridge, where Tuchel formerly lead the team for 18 months, critics were urged by his supporters to “give him a chance”.

One fan was slightly apprehensive about the appointment, admitting that it is a “bit weird” that the England players are being managed by a German.

He said: “I think it’s a bit weird, that a German is managing England, but I think he’s a great manager.

“As a Chelsea fan, I love him and I think they’re going to finally win something.”

He claimed: “I think it’s brilliant. He’s a great manager, he did really, really well for Chelsea, and he will lead England very well.”

Hitting back at critics of Tuchel’s new role, another Chelsea fan urged those who are skeptical to “give him a chance” to prove himself to England.

He added: “He will be the right move because he’s a great coach, and so maybe we should give him a chance. Maybe he can do better.”

Echoing the same stance, one fan said the national team has been “crying out for a more high profile manager”, and is “prepared to give Tuchel a chance” as he will be “fantastic for the club”.

However, one Londoner failed to recognise Thomas Tuchel and said he “don’t recognise his name from any Premier League clubs”.

Delivering his verdict on the move, a final fan concluded that as a big Tuchel fan, he believes the new England manager will “do well” for the club’s success.

He said: “I’m a big Tuchel fan myself, and he is one of my favourite Chelsea managers of all time.

“He’s an excellent tournament coach, so I really feel like he’ll do well for England, honestly.”
