Like most jobs, flight attendants have certain rules and regulations they are required to follow to ensure things run smoothly and professionally.

Barbara Bacilieri, 33, worked as flight attendant for 14 years and shares insights into the job on social media where she’s known as Barbie Bac.

The Argentinian, who lives in Spain, has opened up about what she isn’t allowed to do whilst wearing an airline uniform.

Being affectionate with others isn’t tolerated, and neither is smoking cigarettes and vaping.

Barbara told NeedtoKnow: ‘Kissing and public displays of affection are prohibited.

‘We’re also banned from smoking, whether tobacco or vape pens.’

Perhaps unsurprisingly, flight attendants are not allowed to drink alcohol when wearing their uniform.

It’s ‘strictly prohibited’ but they are welcome to drink water.

However, beverages like coffee and tea do have some restrictions for flight attendants, and they have to be mindful of where they consume them.

Barbara explained: ‘Drinking coffee at the boarding gate is also forbidden.’

Chewing on gum and ‘blowing bubbles’ are more things flight attendants aren’t allowed to do when in their uniform, according to Barbara.

The experienced flight attendant has shared plenty of insider knowledge into the industry.

In another of her viral clips, the Argentine-born air hostess shed light on a little-known inflight trick that she says is not part of formal airline training.

Speaking to What’s The Jam, she said: ‘There’s something that, although offered normally, we prefer to share discreetly. We try not to let anyone see us.

‘And it’s something as simple as a glass of water.’

While it might seem harmless, Barbara explained that serving water openly can spark a chain reaction among other passengers.

She added: ‘Water is contagious. If someone sees a flight attendant walk by with a cup in their hand, passengers in other seats immediately start asking for the same.

‘That’s why, when we carry it, we hide it. This isn’t a strict policy or an airline mandate, but rather a trick learned through experience.’

According to Barbara, even though water is free and part of basic service on most flights, it can take up a lot of time if multiple passengers request it at the same time – especially on long haul flights.

She urged passengers to pop to the galley and ask discreetly for water instead of hitting the call button from their seats.

The flight attendant also reminded travellers that while water is complimentary on many airlines, some low-cost carriers charge for bottled water, so it’s always worth checking before flying.
