Griselda star Alberto Ammann has revealed how Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara ‘composed a monster’ in order to transform herself into the notorious drug lord for the new Netflix series.
Sofia, 51, takes on the part of the so-called ‘Cocaine Godmother’ in the six-episode show – which is a far cry from her usual comedic role of Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in hit television sitcom Modern Family.
Ammann – who plays the role of Griselda Blanco’s second husband Alberto Bravo in the first episode of the series – complimented the ‘professional’ actress on stepping so far out of her comfort zone and described the Colombian star as ‘tough.’
Speaking exclusively to DailyMail.com, the Argentinian actor said: ‘I think for her – and this is my opinion – this is very important because we know her from Modern Family and this character that she plays so well is a tough woman but happy and fun, and this is totally the opposite.’

Ammann described Sofia as ‘professional’ and ‘brave,’ and revealed they laughed together when the cameras weren’t rolling
Ammann continued: ‘She composed a monster. It was very interesting because she jumped right into the swimming pool, she was very brave. She learned to smoke, she learned a lot of things to build this monster because Griselda Blanco was a monster.
‘Sofia is beautiful and she used a fake nose and fake teeth, so it was a very interesting composition. She’s an actress and I’m glad that she has the opportunity to show that to the world, because it’s not easy when, in the mind of the audience, you’re a comic actor or actress, or drama actor or actress.’
‘So, in the case of Sofia I think, “wow, she made that fun comedy,” I laughed a lot and she’s so well positioned in the industry as a comedy actress. For me, if I was in her shoes, I would have thought, “wow, this is a great opportunity for the profession and the audience to watch me and see me doing a different thing,” and that’s to be an actress or an actor, to play different roles.
‘For sure, we have some roles that we do better and others where we are not so good, but as time goes by and you get older, you have more experience, and we grow.’
Ammann and Sofia filmed a couple of intense scenes together for Griselda, but despite the show being so serious, he admitted that they did share some light-hearted moments in between takes.
Talking about working alongside the brunette actress, Ammann said: ‘She’s so open, but she’s very professional. She knows the profession… I don’t like to say the business, because it’s more than that, but we talked a lot, and we laughed.
‘Actually, when we were filming the scene in the car I said to her, “Sofia this guy is terrible”, and she told me… we were speaking in Spanish, and she told me, “yes you are a sh*t!” and we laughed a lot.
‘I think we work for the audience, we work for the story, and we work for our partners. So, if I do my part well, my partner is going to have good things to catch and do their part in a good way, if my partner can take that.

‘Sofia was very, very professional at that point because she took everything… what I did, what I said, and that was very, very nice because when you have a good partner, you grow.’
Ammann continued: ‘For me, working with her was amazing. We just got to know each other and talked about things in the the scene and how to do it with Andy [Baiz] and we did a few rehearsals.
‘Another thing that is interesting to me about this series is that the main character is a woman and, in this world it’s a man’s world and the narcos is run by men, and so, this is a very complex character and Sofia talked a lot about that with me.’
Of course, Ammann is no stranger to playing such roles as he portrayed Colombian drug trafficker Pacho Herrera for three seasons of Netflix series Narcos from 2015 until 2017.
When asked if he ever found it difficult to switch off after a day of filming particularly intense scenes involving murder and violence, Ammann referenced a shocking scene from the first episode of season three of Narcos, in which Pacho murders a guy by tearing his body apart using two motorcycles.
‘For me, just some days [are difficult]. For example when my character dances with another man and they kiss each other and then he kills a man with the motorcycles, that scene was tough,’ Ammann admitted.
‘It was hard. After that scene, my body felt like… it felt disgusting, terrible, cruel, raw, rude. So, sometimes, some days I have that feeling in my body but the rest of days, no, because I need to switch off a little bit. I know I’m going to play a very bad guy and I enjoy playing that kind of role because in real life it’s not possible to do because you’ll go to jail.’
