Britons have declared that the UK should leave the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) after granting a previously deported Albanian criminal asylum in the UK, on the grounds of the “right to a family life”.
Ardit Binaj first entered Britain illegally via a lorry in 2014, before being arrested the following year for burglary. After being deported back to Albania from jail, Binaj returned after just five months to be with his Lithuanian girlfriend – they then got married and had a child together.
Filing a claim with the ECHR under Article 8 – the right to a family life – the 32-year-old was granted permission on his second attempt, in spite of him working illegally in the UK.
Reacting to the case, Britons in Hull told GB News reporter Anna Riley of their frustration with the ECHR, and demanded that Britain should “rule itself”.

One man told GB News: “I don’t think we should stay in the ECHR, because we came out with Brexit for that very reason – to rule our own country.
“It’s as though Europeans are still making us take the same thing from them, it’s crazy the way things go on. But in my opinion, I think we should come away from it altogether.”
Agreeing with her husband, his wife added: “I agree with my husband completely. We came out with Brexit so that we could rule ourselves, and we’ve been told what to do by the EU. So no, we should come out of it completely.”
Highlighting the other efforts the UK has made to keep relations secure with the EU, the Hull resident noted how our country is paying France “millions” to help tackle the migrant crisis, but they are “laughing at us”.

He explained: “We’re paying France millions to stop the boats coming over, and they’re laughing at us. They’re putting our money in the money in the bank and the boats are still coming over – the police aren’t even stopping them on the beaches.
“I can’t understand the government not sending our special forces over to sort the people out.”

Turning the question to a Hull pensioner, she claimed that what goes on in British courts “has nothing to do with Europe”.
She said: “I don’t think it’s anything to do with them, and we need to do our own laws, our own rights, and not follow the Europeans.
“I don’t think the Europeans should have anything to do with us, they live their own lives.”
Echoing the thoughts of the Hull couple, the pensioner also highlighted how Britain has been giving millions of pounds to our European counterparts, to help tackle the migrant crisis.

She added: “Nobody helps us, we’re paying all that money to France, but they’re not stopping any of the immigrants. So why should we do it?”
Delivering her verdict on the case of Ardit Binaj, she stated: “If you’ve done any sort of criminality, you should be deported and that’s the end of it. I don’t agree with bringing them back.”
Offering support for the UK remaining within the ECHR, one Hull resident told GB News that “human rights come first”, and Binaj was right to have his case approved by the court.
When asked if Britain should stay or leave the ECHR, he said: “I think they should stay with the European court. Human rights and people’s safety comes first, so it has to remain.”
