Erik ten Hag insists Andre Onana will bounce back from his latest off-night in Istanbul as he threw his support behind the Manchester United goalkeeper.
Onana was at fault for two letting in two free kicks from Hakim Ziyech at Rams Park on Wednesday night as United were held to a 3-3 draw by Galatasaray that threatens to end their Champions League hopes.
It was the latest setback for the Cameroon keeper who has come under fire for a series of errors since joining United for £47.3million from Inter Milan in the summer, even though he had improved significantly of late.
Ten Hag pointed to Onana’s excellent display at Burnley in September after he was at fault for a Leroy Sane’s goal against Bayern Munich as proof of his keeper’s resilience.
‘He is a strong character. He is a personality and he will deal with it,’ said the United manager. ‘You know also, because you have seen how he is reacting on a bad performance like in Munich. At Burnley he was outstanding.
‘If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats. His expected preventing goals is second-best in the Premier League. He’s doing well but he knows that in the Champions League he has made some mistakes, but overall in the first five months he has done well.’
