“The York of today is a fashionable city that successfully combines its heritage and superb historic architecture with independent shops, restaurants, bars and cafes, to attract tourists from all over the world,” according to Visit York.
The city is home to the annual York Food and Drink Festival every autumn, attracting more than 100 producers showcasing the best of their produce.
Visitors looking to delve into the town’s past can visit the York Castle Museum.
Visit England said: “A truly immersive attraction, York Castle Museum brings the sights, smells and sounds of the city’s history to life.
“Step into a painstakingly recreated Victorian street, complete with bygone characters going about their business in the 19th century, featuring Victorian-styled shops and services, including a sweet shop as a saddler.”
It credits the museum’s depth in research of social history to Dr John Kirk, its founder, who hoarded a “mind-boggling array of everyday items from the Victorian era”.
This included “everything from biscuit moulds to police truncheons”.
Food enthusiasts are encouraged to look beyond chain restaurants and explore the town’s vibrant food scene.
