EastEnders aired an emotional two-hander episode on Tuesday (May 7) and made a rare change to the closing credits to mark the special installment. Yolande (Angela Wynter) and Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) took the spotlight during tonight’s trip to Walford, as devastated Yolande discussed her recent sexual assault by Pastor Clayton.

As Yolande struggled to come to terms with the harrowing assault, she finally broke her silence as Patrick was in shock. He had grown increasingly concerned about Yolande as she became distant, emotional, and withdrawn. But Pastor Clayton had tried to convince Patrick that Yolande had onset dementia which was causing her erratic behaviour.

As Yolande couldn’t come to terms with telling Patrick about what the Pastor did to her, she enlisted Elaine Peacock to tell him over the phone as she locked herself away in the bathroom. Patrick’s blood began to boil as he stormed out of the house and across the Square to confront the pastor but she managed to stop him in his tracks. The pair retreated back inside and discussed the incident.

Yolande’s heart broke as she explained everything to Patrick and although he appeared to be defensive he soon showed support. By the end of the episode, Patrick vowed to stand by his woman while Yolande insisted that she wouldn’t be going to the police but would report Pastor Clayton to the church officials.

EastEnders then scrapped its usual closing credits and the iconic ‘doof doof’ theme tune, swapping them for a more poignant version of The Real Thing track Can’t Get By Without You. This was played over a picture of happier times between Yolande and Patrick, as they prepared to face this difficult new journey together.

Fans of the BBC One soap were left blown away by the powerful episode and flooded social media with praise. On X, one person wrote: “Such a beautiful, powerful and emotional episode.#EastEnders.”

A second stated: “What an amazing amazing episode everyone she be very proud #EastEnders”, while a third pointed out: “No doof doof!.”
