Duchess of Edinburgh and Prince Edward’s son preparing for major news

James, Earl of Wessex – the son Prince Edward and the Duchess of Edinburgh – has just a week to go until he’s set to receive a piece of potentially life-changing news.

The 16-year-old earl, who sits 15th in line to the throne, is mere days away from finding out his GCSE results on August 22.

The Earl of Wessex is understood to be gearing up for the big academic news at Balmoral, alongside senior royals including Prince William, Princess Kate and the King and Queen.

But it’s from further south that James will be waiting for news – with staff at his Oxfordshire school, Radley College, up early to prepare his and his classmates’ grades on results day.

While it’s not known which subjects the earl has elected to take at GCSE level, James will likely be feeling bullish given Radley’s past results.

The prestigious boys’ boarding school between Abingdon and Oxford returned an overwhelming number of 7-9s in 2023 – that’s A or A* grades, in “old money”.

Though it’s probable the public won’t be made privy to the earl’s results if royal protocol is upheld.

His sister, Lady Louise Windsor, took her GCSEs four years prior – and at the time, Buckingham Palace remained tight-lipped, with officials deeming her grades a personal matter.

Back then, her mother Sophie spoke out about her academic prowess, telling the Times: “She’s working hard and will do A-levels.

“I hope she goes to university. I wouldn’t force her, but if she wants to, she can… She’s quite clever!”

Lady Louise eventually went on to follow in the footsteps of the Prince and Princess of Wales, and made the near-nine-hour drive from her home at Bagshot Park to the University of St Andrews.

At the ancient coastal university, the now-20-year-old royal is studying English, following on from her A-levels: English, History, Politics, and Drama.

It will be two years until the earl has to think about getting his possessions ready for university, however – making 2026 a big year in education for a number of family members.

As Prince Edward’s son weighs up university, Prince George will be moving to senior school in the next-but-one September.

Though George could end up at Radley, commentators have tipped the young prince to make like his father and study at Eton College.

Majesty Magazine’s editor-in-chief, Ingrid Seward, said Eton was a “likely” choice, though she noted “the world is their oyster” when it came to choosing a school, adding that no institution in the country would dare refuse the royals.
