Drivers are being warned of hours-long delays on a major motorway in the West Midlands following a massive vehicle fire and serious diesel spillage.
The M6 is closed north between J14 (Stafford) and J15 (Stoke-on-Trent) as emergency services work to bring a serious vehicle fire under control.
National Highways: West Midlands also stated that traffic officers were treating a large diesel spillage affecting all lanes of the motorway.
While the M6 has been reopened northbound following an earlier vehicle fire, lanes 1, 2 and 3 (of 4) remain closed for “ongoing clean-up work”.

NATIONAL HIGHWAYS
It warned that drivers are currently facing delays of around 120 minutes, with maps showing long stretches of the motorway with traffic at a standstill.
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service remains at the scene as officers work to get the blaze under control.
Contractors are also present to treat the “large diesel spillage affecting the carriageway”.
National Highways stated: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
According to AA Route Planner, the road has been plagued since the start of rush hour, with average speeds of just 5mph at around 8am.
Traffic cameras show long queues of vehicles between J14 and J15 as drivers wait for National Highways and the emergency services to clear the carriageway and reopen roads.
Road users are advised to follow the hollow triangle diversion symbol on road signs
- At M6 Junction 14 take the exit to A34 northbound
- Continue along A34 northbound to its junction with A500 at Hanford
- Take the exit to A500 westbound and continue to M6 junction 15
