Drivers have been warned they face disruption as the Blackwall Tunnel gets ready to close to southbound traffic tonight.

The closure is to allow part of the Silvertown Tunnel Project to be completed and will be in effect from 11pm tonight until 8am the following Saturday morning.

The closures are to allow Transport for London to work on a new road layout on the A102. But while southbound traffic will be affected, the tunnel will remain open to northbound vehicles.

However, TfL warned that diversions may be in place on the approach, and at times, northbound traffic could be redirected through the southbound tunnel.

The Silvertown Tunnel will open to the public in 2025TRANSPORT FOR LONDON

This overnight closure is one of several planned to facilitate the ongoing infrastructure improvements in the area.

Motorists travelling southbound are advised to follow signposted diversions during the closure.

For HGVs and other large vehicles, TfL recommends using routes away from central London, noting that size and weight restrictions apply on some river crossings. This guidance aims to minimise congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow around the affected area.

Regular maintenance closures of the Blackwall Tunnel will continue as usual with drivers told to be aware that the charging schemes will run as normal during the closure period.

The Congestion Charge will still operate with drivers fined a £15 daily charge. The zone operates from 7am until 6pm between Monday and Friday and 12pm until 6pm on the weekends and bank holidays.

TfL urges all road users to plan their journeys in advance. Checking travel updates before setting out and allowing extra time for trips is strongly advised to avoid potential delays caused by the closure and subsequent diversions.

The Silvertown Tunnel, when operational, will link additional eastern routes to the Greenwich Peninsula and is set to open in 2025.

It aims to reduce congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel, deliver faster and more reliable journeys, and improve air quality and public transport links.

The Blackwall Tunnel closure is part of a larger infrastructure project. TfL has stated that further closures may be necessary in the future.

Despite the inconvenience, these works are “essential” for improving London’s road network.

The new road layout on the A102 is expected to enhance traffic flow and safety in the long term.

Motorists are reminded to stay alert for diversion signs and follow official guidance to ensure a smooth journey during this period of disruption.
