Drivers are dealing with traffic chaos on a major motorway with queues of five miles after a multi-vehicle collision during rush hour.

National Highways: North-West reported that multiple vehicles had been involved in an accident on the M60 clockwise between J27 and J1 near Stockport.

There are five miles of congestion on the motorway following the incident causing 35 minutes worth of delays above normal travel time.

Road officers from National Highways are on scene, with the service reporting that recovery vehicles were en route to clear the scene.

Transport experts at Inrix said there are also delays on the anticlockwise M60 to J3, which it reports is due to an earlier separate incident on the other side of the road.

Traffic maps show that drivers on the M60 around Manchester will be dealing with long delays this morning with standard congestion and accidents.

When the incident initially occurred, National Highways: North-West closed lane three to deal with the incident.

Manchester Evening News claimed that seven vehicles are believed to have been involved in the incident, citing the North West Motorway Police.

It is believed that the incident was a “damage-only” collision, with no injuries being reported.

Traffic maps also show that the M60 anticlockwise lane is closed on the exit slip road due to a broken down vehicle at J19 A576 Middleton Road (Heaton Park Three Arrows Roundabout).

Monitoring traffic data, Inrix is reporting that drivers in and around Stockport looking to dodge queues should avoid the M67 westbound at Denton Island, where there are delays of 25 minutes.

The A6 (Buxton Road), A6017 (Higher Bents Lane at Victoria Avenue) and the M56 (J3 to J5 in both directions) are also dealing with congestion.

Drivers in and around Manchester are set to deal with delays over the weekend as the M62 between the city and Leeds with be closed at Rochdale.

Network Rail will be demolishing a bridge over the motorway, with disruption expected between J18 and J20.

It will mark the first time the M62 has been closed for two weekends since it opened. Trains will also be disrupted, although National Rail maintains this is being done for the sake of safety.

Dee Murray, from National Highways, said: “A lot of people use this road. That’s a lot of traffic going a different way that they would do normally.

“We would advise that if there’s any travelling you can do that you can put to another week, please do consider that, because it will be very busy.”
