Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has refused to rule out Lee Anderson returning to the Conservative Party and said that “he doesn’t believe that Lee Anderson was motivated by Islamophobia” when he made a number of controversial comments on GB News.

It comes after Lee Anderson was suspended from the Conservative Party yesterday after being accused of making “Islamophobic” comments when discussing Sadiq Khan’s leadership in London.

The ex-deputy Tory party chair has refused to apologise for his remarks.Anderson previously said: “I don’t actually believe that these Islamists have got control of our country, but what I do believe is that they’ve got control of Khan, they’ve got control of London. He’s actually given our capital city away to his mates.”

A spokesperson for Chief Whip Simon Hart said: “Following his refusal to apologise for comments made yesterday, the Chief Whip has suspended the Conservative whip from Lee Anderson MP.”
