David Lammy is set for a “big problem” after he has been appointed as the UK’s new foreign secretary.

Britain’s new prime minister Keir Starmer made the appointment after his party won a widely-predicted landslide victory over Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives on Thursday night.

However, Lammy could find himself in hot water after Trump’s team will most likely vet the minister and his criticism of Trump in the past could be exposed.

In a 2018 Time article ahead of Trump’s first visit to the UK, Lammy committed to be one of “tens of thousands on the streets, protesting against our government’s capitulation to this tyrant in a toupee.”

“Trump is not only a woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathizing sociopath. He is also a profound threat to the international order that has been the foundation of Western progress for so long,” he wrote in Time.

“It is because I cherish and champion those values that this Friday, I will march with London against Donald Trump.”

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Speaking on GB News, host Martin Daubney said: “David Lammy named the foreign secretary. Now that is an appointment that might raise a few eyebrows.

“David Lammy was very critical of Brexiteers, comparing them to Nazis. Post-referendum he was very critical of Donald Trump.

“And if we look over the Atlantic it is looking more likely that Donald Trump could be the President of the United States of America.

“They might have a bit of an awkward conversation when they first meet.”

Speaking on GB News, journalist Mutaz Ahmed said: “Indeed, awkward conversations all around. He’s been making an effort with Donald Trump with the help of Nigel Farage.

“But he’s also someone, by the way, who voted against Trident a few years ago. So he’s going to have to work some personal diplomacy to sort of get over those hurdles.”

Martin said: “Donald Trump probably won’t know who David Lammy is, but he’ll soon be made aware of the critical past.”

When asked if this could be a “problem”, Ahmed said: “It’s a big problem. I don’t think Donald Trump forgets these things, even if he learns some late.

Donald Trump will most likely vet David Lammy

“David Lammy himself is quite a malleable person. You can change his opinion of someone or particular policy when he needs to.

“The risk for both of them, both David Lammy and Keir Starmer, is that they end up being ignored by Donald Trump.

“That’s how the special relationship goes down the tubes simply by freezing them out.

“Donald Trump not answering your calls because he thinks you’re a lefty hater, that’s quite an important thing. We’ll see how it goes.”
