A woman in her 20s has died after falling from the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.

Irish broadcaster RTÉ is reporting, external that the woman was visiting the tourist attraction with three friends when she fell on Saturday afternoon.

A Garda (Irish police) spokesman told News NI that gardaí and emergency services had conducted an operation after reports of an incident at the Cliffs of Moher.

The Irish Coast Guard was contacted at about 13:20 local time and co-ordinated a search operation.

The Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter Rescue 115 was used.

A rescue helicopter located the woman and the Aran Islands’ RNLI lifeboat crew was able to recover her body.

A garda spokesman said the woman’s body remains at the scene.

The cliffs are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Ireland, drawing about 1.5 million visitors per year.

In 2019 a man died after falling from the cliffs while taking a photograph.
