Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown sounded off and called a referee ‘over-emotional’ after receiving his first career ejection in Friday night’s 133-123 win over the New York Knicks.
Brown was sent off in the fourth quarter after getting two technical fouls in rapid succession. The first was issued after Brown tried to argue a foul call and the second followed shortly after he had returned to the bench.
‘I always thought my first career ejection would be something a little more exciting,’ Brown said postgame. ‘Maybe a tussle or something, guys get folded up, go to the ground, not some overemotional ref who had a bad day. What I’m most upset about is I should’ve got my f*****g money’s worth.’
Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla shared that one official told him that Brown said ‘don’t bring that week-a** s**t,’ after fouling Immanuel Quickley. Crew chief Mark Lindsay later told a pool reporter that the first technical foul was issued for using profanity toward an official while the second was for a ‘wave off directed at the official.’
‘You could tell, his emotions were involved, XYZ, wanted to make it a back and forth,’ Brown said. ‘I’m explaining to the ref, and he calls the second tech from the other side of the court, which is a clear example of somebody exercising their power to try to get somebody thrown out the game. I thought it was bulls***.’

‘I’ve been on the sidelines in the NBA for five years, and I’ve seen players act and say things that are way more disrespectful than that,’ Mazzulla said of the ejection.
Brown scored 17 points and had four assists before his exit.
The Celtics continued to rally and closed the game behind Derrick White’s 30-point effort. Jayson Tatum and Kristaps Porzingis also contributed 25 and 21 points, respectively.
Boston collectively shot 52.7 per cent from the field 40.4 per cent from behind the arc to maintain a perfect 10-0 record at home.
The Celtics are 16-5 so far this season while leading both the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference.
Brown will return to the action when the Celtics host the Cleveland Cavaliers at TD Garden on December 12.
