Britons have been given a fresh travel warning for a destination in the Caribbean.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) provided holidaymakers with new information on ongoing protests in Martinique, a Caribbean island and French department.

Martinique is known for its beautiful beaches and water sports, stunning hiking trails, Saint-Pierre volcano, world-class rum and a myriad of cuisines including African-Indian, African-French and African-Caribbean flavours.

Explore France, the official tourism board website, said: “Enjoy a Martinique vacation all year round with its 1,080 km2 landscapes. A luxurious tropical forest covers the northern part of this luxurious yet affordable Caribbean vacation destination, perfect for outdoor activities such as canyoning, hiking, ATVing and horseback riding.

“The southern part of Martinique is the ideal destination for travellers in search of white-sand beaches, coconut palms, and warm waters…it’s a picture-perfect postcard. Water sports enthusiasts have plenty of activities to choose from as well, such as kite surfing, diving, jet skiing, or kayaking.

However, before visiting the stunning destination, it’s important to consult the UK Goverment’s latest travel advice.

The FCDO said: “Following the outbreak of protests, since September 23, authorities have banned the sale and transport of fuels, petroleum, pyrotechnic articles and explosive products.

“You should remain aware of what is happening around you and avoid areas where protests are taking place. Follow the advice of local authorities.

“Due to the ongoing social unrest, further restrictions and curfews have been imposed at short notice. These may be amended at any time.

“There may be disruption to transport networks, including air travel, and you should check with your operator before leaving your accommodation. Other businesses and shops may also be disrupted.”

The latest updates can be found at Préfet of Martinique. Holidaymakers can read the guidance in both English and French.

Protests began in September to demand the alignment of local food prices with those of mainland France, as these are 40 per cent lower.

One protester was shot dead and 26 police officers injured in the unrest.

Before visiting Martinique, holidaymakers should consult the FCDO’s up-to-date guidance. This includes the latest information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, health and getting help.
