Xabi Alonso will not be Liverpool’s next manager after Jurgen Klopp because he wishes to stay in Germany, the club believe.
Liverpool will instead look at other targets including Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi.
The club’s research indicates that Alonso – who had been seen as their chief target – wants to build on his startling season at Bayer Leverkusen.
Leverkusen are the Bundesliga’s champions-elect, with a 10-point gap over Bayern Munich with 12 games to go, and are unbeaten all season.
Alonso joined Leverkusen when they were battling relegation in October 2022 and has revolutionised the side, who are also in the last eight of the Europa League.
